The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks gun violence using police reports, news coverage, and other public sources, defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are killed or injured. As of March 27th, the archive had counted 130 mass shootings in the United States so far in 2023, including this week’s massacre of three children and three adults with an assault rifle in Nashville, Tennessee, the mass shooting at Michigan State University on February 13th, and the massacre in Monterey Park, California on January 21st — the deadliest attack since the Uvalde, Texas school massacre in May 2022.
